Upcycle: Men's Shirt into Ladies Dress!

Hello there! Today I'm going to show you how you can transform a men's shirt into a very cute and wearable women's dress! This is a SUPER EASY project that took me less than an hour to finish.

What you will need:
  • Men's shirt (I used a size L but you can you any size as long as it's a bit big on you)
  • Thread, sewing machine
  • That's it!

Step One : Take your shirt and either pick out the seams that attach the sleeves to the bodice, or just cut the sleeves off carefully along the seam. I'm lazy so I chose to cut the sleeves off. Keep the sleeves as we are going to need them in a minute!

Step 2: Cut the hem off the bottom of the shirt and put it aside.

Step 3: Put the now sleeveless, hemless shirt on you and measure how far down your leg you want the dress to come.  (I put it on my mannequin to take the picture, but you should measure it on your own body if possible). Write down this measurement!

Step 4: Remember than length measurement I told you to write down in step 2? well, take your sleeve that you just cut open, and measure that amount from the  longest tip  of the curved end of the open sleeve (see above). Now cut the sleeve width wise at this measurement. Do this to both sleeves!

Step 5: Cut one of these pieces in half, length wise. Now align these pieces like the above picture.

Step 6: Cut the opposite end of the open sleeve piece (where the cuff was before you cut it off) to a length that lines up with the curved sleeve piece you have already placed at the bottom of your shirt. I know that sounds complicated, but just look at the above picture and then see how I align the pieces in the picture below:

See how nicely it all fits together?!
Step 7: Pin all of these pieces in place, put your dress on a mannequin or a friend so you can pin the hem.img_0669
Step 8: Sew where you have pinned (the sleeve pieces onto the bottom, plus the hem).

Step 9: Now you want to try the sewn dress on and measure where you want the waist tie to go. Now you can use the cuffs that you cut off as loops to put the waist tie through! Sew one cuff onto each side. (If the cuffs look to big (as mine did) you can cut them down and just use a small piece of each cuff for the loops)
Step 10: Hem the raw edges on the arms( fold over twice and sew), where you originally took the sleeves off from.
Step 10: Take the hem that you cut off in step 2. Fold and sew if there are loose threads. If it look fine as it, just pop it through the cuffs-turned-loops that you sewed on each side and VOILA! You're done!
